The tulips of Maya was another departure from the original shaped oval tulips I was painting. I wanted to head in a slightly more realistic direction and to develop the tulip shape just enough for them to ressemble the flower. I am much more drawn to unrealistic depiction of my subject matter but I think these are still very whimsical and magical looking. In fact, a close friend of mine said he was reminded of Maya the Bee, the original cartoon from the 80s when he saw a picture of the piece. I had briefly forgotten about her but once reminded my head was flooded with images of this fantastical world that I adored as a young child.
